Was naming a black cat Shadow tempting fate?

Jeremy Bartonโ€™s family pet lived up to his name a little too well after disappearing without a trace in the wilderness of northern British Columbia. While Barton was driving home from the far north of the province, Shadow slipped out of the family car at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park and vanished into the surrounding forest.

The accidental escape triggered a desperate search through the rugged terrain of the northern Rocky Mountains, but despite Bartonโ€™s efforts, Shadow was nowhere to be found. Eventually, Barton had no choice but to return home to Oklahoma City and break the heartbreaking news to his two young sons: their beloved cat was gone.

What followed were five long months of uncertainty.

โ€œFor most pet owners, the worst nightmare isnโ€™t just losing an animal โ€” itโ€™s not knowing what happened to them,โ€ said Christine Sutherland, a resident of Fort St. John, British Columbia. โ€œThat uncertainty is unbearable.โ€

Against all odds, Sutherland and another local resident, Bruce Kosugi, later discovered Shadow near Liard River Hot Springs, where the cat had somehow survived on his own for months. Despite being highly allergic to cats, Kosugi joined Sutherland in caring for Shadow. The two volunteers โ€” both describing themselves as Rotarians โ€” even agreed to drive the cat eight hours south to Fort St. John.

CBC News spoke separately with both Sutherland and Barton, without detailing how they ultimately connected. However it came together, Sutherland then went a step further, arranging to fly Shadow to Winnipeg. Barton drove 16 hours from Oklahoma to meet them, finally reuniting with his long-lost cat just in time for the holidays.

โ€œThat woman is the closest thing to a saint Iโ€™ve ever met,โ€ Barton told CBC Radio, speaking of Sutherlandโ€™s efforts. Sutherland said her motivation came from thinking about Bartonโ€™s children, who had been devastated when Shadow disappeared.

โ€œThis cat meant everything to those two boys,โ€ she said. โ€œAnd knowing theyโ€™ll get him back before Christmas makes it all worth it.โ€

As for Shadow โ€” a cat who managed to survive months alone in one of North Americaโ€™s harshest environments โ€” perhaps the adventure will serve as a reminder that staying close to home, and in plain sight, is where he belongs.
