A Strange Habit That Wouldn’t Go Away
For years, Kristine Richards noticed that her chihuahua, Flag, had developed an unusual habit.
Again and again, he would lift his paw and tap insistently beneath her arm. The repeated behavior was irritating at first, and Kristine often brushed it aside as one of her dog’s many little quirks.
But Flag did not stop.
His persistence eventually made the 61-year-old wonder whether he was trying to draw her attention to something important.
A Small Lump Changes Everything
Kristine later discovered a small lump beneath her breast.
Remembering stories about dogs responding to changes in their owners’ health, she began to question whether Flag’s strange behavior might be connected.
She arranged a medical examination, hoping her concerns would prove unfounded.
Instead, doctors diagnosed her with an aggressive form of hormone-sensitive lobular breast cancer. By the time it was discovered, the disease had already reached her lymph nodes.
The news was overwhelming.
Kristine had experienced no other obvious warning signs, making Flag’s repeated pawing feel all the more significant.
The Beginning of a Difficult Journey
Following her diagnosis, Kristine began an intense course of treatment.
She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, along with medication designed to help fight the disease.
The year that followed was physically and emotionally exhausting. Each appointment brought new uncertainty, and Kristine often felt as though she were moving along a road without knowing where it would lead.
Throughout it all, Flag remained faithfully beside her.
His Pawing Suddenly Stops
After Kristine completed her first round of chemotherapy, she noticed something remarkable.
Flag stopped pawing beneath her arm.
The behavior that had continued for years disappeared and has not returned since.
Although it is impossible to know exactly what Flag sensed, Kristine believes he recognized that something was wrong long before she understood it herself.
To her, his persistence helped encourage the medical check that may have saved her life.
The News She Had Been Waiting For
One year after beginning treatment, Kristine received the news she had desperately hoped to hear.
Her cancer was in remission.
The moment brought an enormous wave of relief. After months of fear, exhausting treatments and uncertainty, she finally felt she had reached the end of a long and difficult journey.
Years later, the cancer has still not returned.
From Mischievous Puppy to Lifelong Protector
Flag is now trained as Kristine’s assistance dog and remains an important part of her everyday life.
He is rewarded with plenty of affection, cuddles and his favorite lamb-flavored treats. His warm personality has also made him well known within the local community.
The little chihuahua even once received the honorary title of town mayor in St Marychurch, a coastal community in Devon.
It is a remarkable transformation for a dog once described as troublesome because of his habit of chewing everything in sight.
A Bond Beyond Words
Kristine now sees Flag as far more than a pet.
He is her companion, her helper and, in her eyes, the tiny guardian who refused to be ignored when something was wrong.
What began as an annoying little paw beneath her arm ultimately became a warning she could not overlook.
Flag may be small, but the difference he made in Kristine’s life was immeasurable.
