UK Unveils Ambitious Animal Welfare Strategy

The UK government has released a new animal welfare strategy that could affect millions of animals across the country.

Animal welfare groups have welcomed the plan’s bold vision, praising its strong recommendations — while calling for swift action and clear timelines to ensure real change.

Key Reforms in the Strategy

Among the most significant proposals are:

  • Phasing out cages for laying hens and mothering pigs
  • Ending the culling of male chicks
  • Banning CO₂ stunning for pigs, a method widely considered cruel
  • Moving away from fast-growing breeds that suffer health problems
  • Recognising the illegality of boiling decapod crustaceans, including lobsters and crabs
  • Banning trail hunting and working to end the use of snare traps
  • Enforcing the live export ban, which came into force in May 2024
  • Preventing equines from being exported for slaughter
  • Introducing import rules to ensure overseas products meet UK welfare standards
  • Strengthening dog breeding laws to improve traceability and enforcement

Calls for Action

While campaigners have applauded the strategy, they stress that recommendations alone are not enough.

Advocates are urging the government to turn these commitments into law, backed by realistic timelines and firm enforcement, so animals can begin benefiting as soon as possible.
