A volunteer and his devoted German shepherd have been praised as heroes after helping rescue a missing toddler during freezing conditions in Dorchester, New Hampshire.

The search began when a distraught mother called 911 to report that her 2-year-old daughter and the family’s two dogs had vanished. Temperatures were already dropping below 40Β°F and expected to plunge into the 20s by nightfall. A gap in the backyard fence revealed what likely happened β€” two adventurous dogs and a curious little girl had wandered off together.

At 3:15 p.m. on October 10, emergency dispatchers sent out an alert. Fire and rescue crews, police officers, and dozens of volunteers quickly joined the effort. In total, around 90 people began combing the dense forest in hopes of finding the child before darkness set in.

β€œEveryone stopped what they were doing and showed up, knowing how quickly the temperature was falling,” Sgt. Christopher McKee of New Hampshire Fish and Game told The Washington Post. β€œThey were all volunteers, giving their time freely β€” the outpouring of support was incredible.”

Among the volunteers was Jeremy Corson, a seasoned search and rescue worker from Concord β€” nearly 40 miles away β€” and his 7-year-old German shepherd, Freyja, named after the Norse goddess of love and beauty. Together, they had responded to many missions before, but this one would be especially meaningful.

β€œThe woods were so thick you could barely see a few feet ahead,” Corson said. β€œFreyja and I have to work together β€” I read the wind and terrain, and she follows her nose. We’re a team.”

As the hours passed, the family’s two dogs made their way home, worrying rescuers that the little girl might now be alone in the cold. The setting sun added to the urgency.

Then, around 8 p.m., Freyja picked up a strong scent trail. Corson called out the toddler’s name β€” and a tiny voice answered back. Moments later, they found her safe and smiling. She mistook Corson for her father and happily reached out to him.

Back at home, her mother was overcome with emotion when she heard the news. The toddler was taken to the hospital for precautionary checks but was otherwise unharmed. When asked how she felt, she reportedly said she was β€œready for night-night.”

Corson couldn’t have been prouder of Freyja. To celebrate her success, he rewarded her with a brand-new ball β€” her favorite toy.

Online, people flooded the story with praise. β€œThe bond between dog and handler is incredible,” one commenter wrote, while others shared renewed admiration for the loyalty and intelligence of German shepherds.

Thanks to a volunteer’s quick response β€” and Freyja’s extraordinary nose β€” a terrifying night ended with warmth, relief, and gratitude.
