“To them, it is simply what makes sense.”
When a tiny alpaca named Baby Doll lost her mom at just 4 weeks old, her world changed overnight.
Left without the care she needed — and with her human guardian unable to fully look after her — she was in urgent need of help.
That’s when rescuers at Edgar’s Mission stepped in.

A Safe Place To Heal
At the sanctuary, Baby Doll finally found safety.
She was given:

- A warm, cozy place to sleep
- Regular bottle feedings
- Around-the-clock care
But even with all that love, something was missing.
The Friendship She Needed
Alpacas are deeply social animals. They rely on companionship to feel secure.
So when Baby Doll met Peanut and Butter — two orphaned baby goats — something clicked instantly.
The three quickly became inseparable.

“They are each offering the other what they have lost,” said sanctuary founder Pam Ahern. “A sense of belonging.”
A Growing Little Family
Soon, their circle expanded.
A rescue calf named Venus joined the group — and just like that, a blended family was formed.
Despite being different species, they:
- Sleep together
- Play together
- Comfort each other
To humans, it may seem unusual.
To them, it’s completely natural.
The Power Of Connection
Baby Doll’s story is a reminder that healing isn’t just about food and shelter.
It’s also about connection.
“In the absence of fear, and in the presence of care, connection follows,” Ahern said.
A Second Chance — Together
What began as a heartbreaking loss turned into something beautiful:
A tiny alpaca found not just safety — but a family.
And in that shared bond, every one of them found exactly what they needed. 🐾💫
