“He appears to have lived a rough and tumble life.”
When Cosmo arrived at Tri-County Humane Society as a stray at the end of August, staff could immediately tell that life had not always been easy for him.
The black cat seemed frightened and withdrawn, and there was something else that made him stand out right away — his ears were unusually small and crumpled.
Although no one knows exactly what Cosmo experienced before arriving at the shelter, staff believe years of untreated ear infections and frostbite may have permanently changed the shape of his ears.
“While we don’t know his backstory, he appears to have lived a rough and tumble life,” Kate Kompas of Tri-County Humane Society told The Dodo.
Despite his difficult past, Cosmo was thankfully in good overall health. Shelter staff focused on giving him plenty of time, patience and space to adjust to his unfamiliar surroundings.
And while humans might immediately notice his unusual ears, Cosmo himself doesn’t seem particularly concerned about looking different.
“I don’t know if he knows he’s different, but he’s a cat, so he likely thinks he’s special anyway,” Kompas said.
His distinctive appearance may be a reminder of everything he endured while living outside, but to the people caring for him, it is also proof of just how resilient he is.
Now that Cosmo is safe, everyone at the shelter hopes the next chapter of his life will include something he may never have experienced before: a permanent, loving home.
Cosmo would thrive best in a calm household with people who understand that trust cannot be rushed. He appreciates having his own space and needs a family willing to let him approach affection on his own terms.
Once he feels comfortable, however, his softer side begins to appear.
“He’s definitely an independent cat who appreciates having boundaries, but he has a sweet, loving side,” Kompas said. “The way to his heart is definitely food, our volunteers report — if you want pets, he wants food in exchange.”
For the right person, earning Cosmo’s trust may simply require patience, understanding — and perhaps a few well-timed treats.
His ears may make him look different from other cats, but underneath his tough exterior, Cosmo wants exactly what so many shelter animals are searching for: a safe place, people he can trust and a home to finally call his own.
