A man in London had been keeping an eye on a mother cat and her three kittens after noticing the little family living in his yard. He began leaving food out for them and, at first, didn’t have much reason to worry.
That changed when he noticed something unusual around one of the kittens’ necks.
The tiny cat had somehow managed to get the broken top of a glass jar stuck around her body. The sharp glass was pressing into her fur, and it was clear she needed help as soon as possible.
Concerned for the kitten’s safety, the man reached out for assistance. The RSPCA and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home soon stepped in to help rescue the entire feline family.
Paige Havlin, an animal rescue officer with the RSPCA, went to the property and worked with the man to safely secure the mother and her three kittens. She then transported them to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where staff immediately turned their attention to freeing the trapped kitten.
Removing the glass had to be done carefully to avoid causing further injury.
“Thankfully, with two pairs of hands, we were able to carefully wiggle the kitten’s legs through the glass jar and then slide it over her neck and off,” Havlin said in a press release. “She had a few superficial cuts but, miraculously, no major injuries.”
The kitten was later named Mason, and everyone involved was relieved to discover that her frightening experience had left her with only minor wounds.
Once the glass was removed, Mason and the rest of her family were given a safe place to rest and recover at Battersea.
“Mason and her littermates are recovering remarkably well following their frightening ordeal,” Grace Oliver, cattery team leader at Battersea, said in a press release. “Battersea’s vets fully assessed the family when they arrived at our London center and found that, amazingly, Mason had suffered no significant injuries.”
The remaining members of the family were given names as well: Mama Moustache, Baby Moustache and Kilner.
After everything they had been through, the cats were finally able to relax in a safe environment while receiving the care and attention they needed. Staff began helping the kittens become more comfortable around people and adjust to their new surroundings.
“Our feline experts have since been working to build the kittens’ confidence, giving them the time and space they need to settle and thrive,” Oliver said.
With Mason safely freed from the glass and the entire family now out of danger, the rescue team can focus on the next chapter of their lives: finding each of them a loving home where they can continue to grow, explore and simply enjoy being cats.
