“If I had reached for that latch without looking …”
When Frank Fleming checked one of his trail cameras on his property in Costa Rica, he thought he was dealing with a simple annoyance.
A small branch had fallen and was blocking the lens.
But as he tried to fix it, he realized something unsettling:
He wasn’t alone.
A Perfectly Hidden Surprise
Right next to the camera, blending almost invisibly into the surroundings, was a White-tailed hognose viper.
The snake’s camouflage was so effective that even experienced wildlife watchers might miss it at first glance.
“If I had reached without looking,” Fleming said, “I’d be typing this from the ER.”
A Close Call
Fleming, who is very familiar with snakes, immediately backed away.

He needed to:
- Remove the stuck branch
- Retrieve the camera’s memory card
But without disturbing the snake too much.
Carefully, he unscrewed the camera to free the branch.
That’s when the viper reacted — striking toward him multiple times.
A Careful Rescue — For Both Of Them
Instead of panicking, Fleming stayed calm.
He gently used a stick to guide the snake away into a nearby pile of leaves and branches, giving it space while keeping himself safe.
No one was harmed — not the man, and not the snake.
A Master Of Disguise
Afterward, Fleming shared photos of the encounter.
Many people couldn’t even spot the snake at first.
That’s how effective its natural camouflage is — a crucial survival skill in the wild.

A Lesson Learned
Even for someone experienced, the moment was a powerful reminder:
When you’re out in nature, always stay aware.
Because sometimes, what looks like a harmless branch…
might actually be something watching you first. 👀🐍
