“It was almost like a miracle.”
One peaceful morning in Wilmington, North Carolina, an artist named Olga stepped onto her balcony with a cup of tea when an alarming scene in the nearby pond caught her eye. A tiny duckling was struggling in the water while its mother repeatedly splashed and nudged it, making it seem at first as though she was being aggressive.
As Olga watched more closely, she realized the mother duck wasn’t attacking her baby at all. The duckling had become tangled in a piece of netting, and the frantic parent was desperately trying to help free it. Every attempt to pull the little one loose failed, leaving the exhausted bird trapped and vulnerable.
Olga immediately tried contacting a local wildlife rescue organization, but because it was still very early in the morning, no one was available to respond. Knowing they couldn’t wait, Olga and a friend decided to step in. Using a broom, her friend gently guided the frightened duckling toward the edge of the pond, where they could safely reach it.
Once the duckling was on shore, they carefully cut away the net wrapped around its tiny legs. After the last strands were removed, the little bird quickly regained its energy. Within moments, it was back on its feet, hurrying toward the water where its anxious mother and siblings had been waiting.

The reunion was immediate and heartwarming as the duckling rejoined its family, and together they paddled away across the pond as if nothing had happened. What could have ended in tragedy instead became a happy ending thanks to the quick thinking and compassion of two caring people.
Since that unforgettable morning, Olga has continued checking on the duck family every day. She enjoys watching them grow and often counts each duckling to make sure they’re all together, finding comfort in seeing the little family safely exploring the pond side by side.
