Severe storms recently swept across San Antonio, Texas, triggering dangerous flash floods that left many stray and lost animals stranded in rising waters. Among those in need of help were two very different dogs, each trapped in a flooded stormwater canal and relying on rescuers for a second chance.
The first emergency involved a large senior mastiff named Monty. Somehow, the gentle giant had ended up at the bottom of a deep drainage canal as floodwaters continued to rise around him. With steep concrete walls surrounding the exhausted dog, climbing out on his own was impossible.

Unlike Monty, the frightened youngster was terrified by the unfamiliar people trying to help him. He barked, dodged, and attempted to escape as rescuers worked carefully to gain his trust.
With patience and persistence, the team safely lifted River out of the dangerous water and transported him to the shelter. Soon after his arrival, an unexpected happy ending unfolded. River’s family, who had been desperately searching for him since the storm, spotted his photo online and immediately rushed to bring him home.
While River was joyfully reunited with the people who had missed him, Monty’s story is still being written. Safe from the flood and recovering well, he now waits for a forever family to discover him. Thanks to the dedication and quick response of local animal rescuers, both dogs escaped life-threatening situations and were given the opportunity for a brighter future.
