“He was barely keeping his head above water …”
On a bright afternoon off the coast of Brigantine, New Jersey, two close friends were enjoying a Jet Ski ride when an unusual sight in the water caught their attention. As they approached, they realized the object drifting with the current was actually a struggling great egret fighting to stay afloat.
The pair, who volunteer with a local wildlife rescue organization, immediately knew the bird was in serious trouble. From a distance, they couldn’t tell what they were seeing, but once they got closer, it became clear that the exhausted egret was barely able to keep its head above the surface.
Great egrets are a familiar sight along New Jersey’s waterways, recognized by their brilliant white feathers, long legs, and graceful necks. Although these birds often hunt in shallow wetlands, they are not built for extended swimming. When their feathers become completely waterlogged, flying becomes impossible, leaving them vulnerable to drowning.
By the time the rescuers reached the bird, its entire body was soaked and weighed down by water. Weak and exhausted, it struggled to stay above the surface and showed clear signs of distress.
Using a fishing net they had with them, the women carefully lifted the egret from the water and brought it safely back to shore. Once on land, they discovered just how severe the situation had become. The bird was drenched to the skin, motionless from exhaustion, and in urgent need of professional care.
The rescuers quickly transported the egret to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center, where trained specialists immediately began treatment. With proper medical attention, the bird is expected to recover fully before being released back into its natural habitat.
Thanks to the rescuers’ sharp observation and swift response, what could have ended in tragedy became a story of hope. Their timely intervention gave the exhausted egret a second chance to recover and eventually soar through the skies once again.
