Senior Cat Abandoned in Stroller With Heartbreaking Note Finds Hope at NYC Shelter
Last week, staff at Animal Haven, a shelter in New York City, received a heartbreaking call. A Good Samaritan walking through Midtown Manhattan had stumbled upon an unattended baby stroller — but instead of a child, it held a fluffy, frightened cat.
When an Animal Haven team member arrived, they found not only the cat, but a handwritten note taped to the stroller.
“Please find a home for Pumpkin,” the note read. “She is a good cat. She warms up to other cats in two weeks. I’m recently homeless. I can’t take care … I’m sorry.”

There was no sign of the person who left her. Just a heartfelt plea, a senior cat named Pumpkin, and the unspoken pain of someone forced to make an impossible decision.
No Room — But No Way They’d Say No
The Good Samaritan had already tried calling over 10 shelters, but each one was full. Animal Haven was also operating at capacity — yet they knew they couldn’t leave Pumpkin behind.
“Although we, too, are at capacity, we simply could not just leave her on a busy Midtown street,” the shelter shared on Facebook.

Pumpkin was gently brought back to the shelter, where staff made space for her and helped her settle in for the night. Though clearly confused and a bit scared, she welcomed their kindness with affection.
“It’s clear that Pumpkin was loved,” Animal Haven wrote. “We’re heartbroken for her — and for her person, who must’ve felt they had no other option.”
A Second Chance for Pumpkin
Now safe and cared for, Pumpkin is slowly adjusting to her new life. Shelter staff describe her as sweet and gentle, just trying to understand her new environment.

“She is available for adoption and has received some interest!” said Kristen Kenney, Animal Haven’s director of projects and partnerships. “So far, she’s doing well, just a little unsure.”
While Pumpkin waits for her forever home, she’s surrounded by the love and comfort she deserves — and will never be left behind again.
“Now, Pumpkin is safe,” Animal Haven wrote. “And we hope she’ll find a new home soon.”
