“I knew I wouldnβt be leaving the auction without them.β
This is a touching rescue story about a mother who never stopped protecting her baby, even while she was suffering herself.
Mary Jane, a miniature horse, and her foal, Moose, were found at a horse auction by Staci Wilson, director of Ridgetop Rescue. As Wilson walked through the auction looking for animals that needed help, one pair immediately caught her attention.
The frightened mother and baby were huddled together in the corner of a pen with no food or water. Written on Mary Jane’s body were the words “bred back,” indicating that she had likely been bred again and could already be pregnant while still caring for her young foal.

“When we first saw them, it was heartbreaking,” Wilson said. “Both scared and standing in the corner of the pen. We decided to rescue them right away. I knew I wouldn’t be leaving the auction without them.”
Wilson purchased the pair and led them to her minivan. A kind stranger in the parking lot helped load the horses safely into the vehicle. Although they remained nervous, they seemed to sense that they were finally safe.

The three-hour drive to Ridgetop Rescue marked the beginning of a new chapter.
As soon as Mary Jane and Moose stepped onto the rescue farm, their behavior changed dramatically. Instead of cowering in fear, they relaxed and began exploring their peaceful surroundings.
“They both reacted so well to their new home, it was amazing to see,” Wilson said. “They seem content and relieved to be in a stable and safe environment.”

A veterinarian examined them that same evening.
The checkup revealed that Moose was healthy, thanks largely to the care and sacrifice of his mother. Mary Jane, however, had clearly endured tremendous hardship. She was extremely thin, had missing teeth, and suffered from a twisted back leg. Despite her own poor condition, she had somehow managed to keep her foal healthy and nourished.
Because of the “bred back” marking, the rescue plans to test Mary Jane for pregnancy once she has had time to recover.
“We will test for pregnancy in a month or so when she settles in and feels better,” Wilson explained.

For now, the focus is on helping both horses heal physically and emotionally.
Instead of facing an uncertain future at auction, Mary Jane and Moose now live on a sanctuary where they receive nutritious food, veterinary care, and plenty of love. Every day they grow stronger and more confident.
“They are doing well and seem to be thriving,” Wilson said.
Their story highlights the remarkable devotion of a mother who gave everything she had to protect her babyβand the compassion of rescuers who ensured both of them would finally get the safe, peaceful life they deserved.
