A frightened pig found collapsed beside a busy highway in Pennsylvania has gone from the brink of tragedy to a life filled with safety, friendship, and plenty of joyful “zoomies.”
An Urgent Rescue Call
Recently, rescuers from Lancaster Farm Sanctuary in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, received an emergency call from a local police officer.
A very large pig had collapsed on the shoulder of a major highway, and officers didn’t know how to safely help her.
“They were like, ‘Oh my God, we really, really need your help,'” sanctuary staff member Sarah recalled in a video shared by The Dodo.
A Lucky Escape
The rescue team believes the pig had likely fallen or escaped from a livestock trailer while traffic was stopped.
Because the region hosts numerous live animal auctions, rescuers suspect she may have been transported after being sold for slaughter.
Jonina, another member of the sanctuary team, explained:
“It’s very possible it was a day that was, like, ‘slaughter pig sale,’ and she had just been purchased and was on her way to a grim fate and just had this lucky chance.”
What could have been a tragedy instead became an opportunity for a completely new life.
Bringing Robin to Safety
Using portable corral panels, the rescuers carefully surrounded the exhausted pig and gently guided her into their trailer.
Once back at the sanctuary, they gave her a new name:
Robin.
Learning to Be Happy
At first, Robin was nervous, withdrawn, and unsure of her new surroundings.
But as she realized she was finally safe, her personality quickly emerged.
She became known around the sanctuary for racing around the fields in energetic bursts of excitementβbehavior affectionately known as “zoomies.”
“Robin seemed to love zooming right away,” Jonina said.
Enjoying Her New Home
Robin now enjoys everything sanctuary life has to offer.
She has:
her own cozy little house
spacious pastures to explore
cool mud wallows, which pigs use to stay comfortable and protect their skin
Sarah said:
“She has her own little house, which is very cute. She loves, loves, loves going in the mud wallows.”
A New Friendship
More recently, Robin was introduced to the sanctuary’s main pig herd.
She quickly formed a bond with another pig named Jean Marie, and caregivers are excited to watch their relationship develop.
In a Facebook post, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary wrote:
“We have no idea what Robin and Jean’s relationship will become, but we couldn’t help wondering if we were witnessing the very first moments of a new friendship.”
The sanctuary added:
“This is what sanctuary makes possible. The chance to heal, build relationships, make your own choices. To discover who you are when your life is finally your own.”
A Life She Never Expected
Robin’s story could have ended on the side of a highway or at a slaughterhouse. Instead, thanks to the quick response of concerned police officers and the compassion of Lancaster Farm Sanctuary’s rescue team, she now has a permanent home where she is free to run, play, make friends, and simply be a pig.
Her transformation is a powerful reminder of how a single act of rescue can completely change the course of an animal’s life.
