Roger: The Stray Dog Who Found Home on a Tennis Court 🎾🐾
Most street dogs dream of a forever home. But for one little black pup in Guarne, Colombia, his happily-ever-after began the moment he stepped onto a tennis court.
In 2014, a stray wandered into INDER Guarne, the town’s Institute of Sports and Recreation. The tennis instructors had never seen him before—but it didn’t take long for them to discover his one true passion.
“The dog is obsessed with tennis balls,” said Duván Henao, one of the instructors. “He goes crazy over them.”
A Pup in Love with Tennis
The pup, later named Roger, spent his first day chasing stray tennis balls across the court, tail wagging in delight. The staff left out food and water, but when the night came, Roger made a choice: he was staying.
Over the next 11 years, Roger became a daily fixture at INDER. At first, he just chased balls. But soon, he began returning them to players, earning his official role as the court’s beloved ball collector.
“At first, he would run off with the balls,” Henao said. “But over time, he learned to bring them back.”
A Home Without Walls
Though Roger had no house, INDER became his sanctuary. The staff created a cozy corner in their office where he could sleep, while ensuring he always had food, water, flea and tick care, and neutering to keep the local stray population in check.
Students and instructors adored him. His playful energy and constant alertness made every lesson brighter.
“What I love most about Roger is that he’s always active, always alert, and always wants to play,” said student Tomás Ruiz. “We play with him, and we have fun together.”
Roger’s handful of friends soon grew to hundreds of admirers from all over town. Everyone who met him fell instantly in love with his cheerful, loyal spirit.
Forever Remembered
In 2025, 11 years after his arrival, the INDER team decided to honor Roger permanently by erecting a statue in his memory. But just weeks before the unveiling, Roger’s health declined, and on November 21, he passed away, surrounded by the instructors who had loved him for over a decade.
“Our beloved Roger… is now playing in doggy Heaven, surrounded by thousands of tennis balls,” INDER Guarne wrote. “[His] paw prints will forever be etched in our hearts.”
Despite their grief, the community celebrated Roger’s life. The statue was unveiled as planned, a stone tribute to a dog who had become more than a mascot—he was a friend, a colleague, and a piece of Guarne’s heart.
“This tribute isn’t just for a puppy,” the team said. “It’s for a friend who ran, played, watched generations of athletes grow, and gave love in the noblest of ways: by being himself.”
A Giant Family
Even after his passing, Roger’s spirit lives on. His statue stands on the tennis court he loved, a reminder of the joy and connection a stray dog brought to an entire community.
“Roger didn’t have an owner,” INDER shared. “He had a giant family.”
From a stray pup wandering alone to a town’s beloved tennis companion, Roger’s story reminds us that love and loyalty can create home, even in the most unexpected places.
