He was so confused πŸ’”

Samson’s Journey from Abandoned Dog to Beloved Family Pet

Abandoned dogs are, sadly, a common sight for animal rescue volunteers in rural Alabama. But when a volunteer named Summer spotted a dog alone in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree, she knew she had found a special case that needed help.

What started as a quick stop for milk turned into a heartwarming rescue mission for a new four-legged friend.

Abandoned and Alone

Summer discovered the dog, later named Samson, sitting quietly in the parking lot. Employees explained that his owner had dropped him off that morning and left, never returning.

Samson had been waiting all day, hoping his trusted owner would come back. But his nervousness and confusion made it difficult for Summer to approach him at first.

β€œIt was clear he was scared, confused and still waiting for the person he had trusted to come back for him,” said Merrill Fortier, social media and marketing manager at Shultz’s Guest House.

A Second Chance

Unable to stop thinking about Samson, Summer returned the next morning to check on him. Although he was no longer at the Dollar Tree, she soon found him just 100 yards down the road at the town’s only gas station.

With patience and a trail of hot dogs, Summer finally earned Samson’s trust, proving that small acts of kindness could make a big difference.

Vet Check and Early Care

After rescuing him, Samson visited a veterinarian for a thorough checkup. The results were promising:

  • He was slightly thin
  • Had a few fleas
  • An old nose injury gave him a unique look

Otherwise, he was healthy, ready for some good meals, and prepared to thrive under consistent care.

Fostering and Healing

Summer took Samson home for foster care, where she spent about two and a half weeks helping him adjust to life with humans again.

During this time, Samson rediscovered his affectionate and playful personality:

  • Hiking with his foster family
  • Sleeping beside them
  • Going on car rides
  • Joining in on everyday adventures

β€œIt became clear that Samson was a dog who deeply wanted connection,” said Fortier.

Finding His Forever Home

Once his foster period ended, Samson moved to Shultz’s Guest House in Massachusetts to await his forever family. Remarkably, it took only five days for him to find a loving home.

Today, Samson is thriving with his new family. He enjoys adventures with his new dog sister, Lucy, and is living a life full of love and companionship.

What was once a lonely, confused dog in a Dollar Tree parking lot is now a joyful, loved member of a family, proof that patience and compassion can change a life forever.
