“The relief and disbelief were huge.”
Recently, outdoorsman Devin Sedotal was exploring a Louisiana bayou when something unusual caught his eye.
Across the swamp, a small, frightened dog stood staring at him.
Unsure how to help in that moment, Sedotal snapped a photo and posted it on Facebook, hoping someone could step in. Before long, the post reached Alyssa Muse, director of Aviary Creature Rescue, who immediately headed to the scene.
Racing Against the Storm
By the time Muse arrived, heavy rain had begun pouring over the bayou.
First, she and Sedotal waited out the storm. Then, once the rain eased, they climbed into Sedotal’s boat and returned to the area where he had last seen the dog.
Despite the mud and rising water, Muse carefully searched the shoreline. However, as time passed, doubt began to creep in.
Just then, Sedotal called out from farther down the bank.
A Smart Survivor
When Muse reached him, she saw the small dog peeking out from inside a rotted log.
During the storm, the pup had crawled into the hollow wood to protect himself. Now, his face appeared through the broken opening, cautiously watching his rescuers.
Relief washed over Muse. However, that feeling quickly shifted when she got a closer look at the dog’s condition.
Injured but Still Hopeful

The dog was severely underweight and had a large wound on his back leg.
Even so, his spirit remained strong. The moment he locked eyes with Muse, his tail began thumping.
Without a blanket nearby, Muse wrapped the dog in her jacket to keep him warm. For what may have been the first time in weeks, he rested safely in someone’s arms.
A Difficult Discovery
Muse named the pup Devin, honoring the man who first spotted him.
She rushed him to a veterinarian, where doctors began immediate treatment. Soon, they made a heartbreaking discovery: bullet fragments remained lodged in his injured leg.

Veterinarians cleaned and treated the wound, started him on antibiotics, and gave him medication to manage the pain.
A New Chapter Begins
After stabilizing Devin, Muse arranged for his transfer to Villalobos Rescue Center, where he could continue recovering.
Today, Devin remains under care while his leg heals. Although he still wears a bandage, his cheerful personality hasn’t faded.
Despite everything he endured, he continues to greet his caregivers with happiness and trust.

Looking Toward a Brighter Future
For now, Devin focuses on healing.
Soon, once he fully recovers, he will begin the search for a forever family — one that will give him the love and safety he always deserved.
After surviving alone in the bayou, this little fighter finally has a future filled with hope.
