“They have been cuddling and following each other around ever since.”
A Tiny Visitor in Trouble
One quiet afternoon in mid-2024, a shopkeeper in San Francisco noticed something unusual moving through the aisles of his neighborhood market. A small black kitten, clearly injured, was limping through the store as if searching for help.
The owner of the Corner Market at 3rd and Kirkwood immediately recognized the kitten was in distress and rushed him to San Francisco Animal Care & Control (SFACC).
An Urgent Medical Emergency
At SFACC, veterinary staff attempted to examine the frightened kitten, but he was too scared to be handled safely. To properly assess his injuries, the team gently sedated him—and quickly discovered the severity of the situation.

The kitten’s right rear paw was dangerously swollen, nearly twice its normal size, covered in debris, and emitting a strong odor of infection. While the cause of the injury was unclear, the risk was obvious: without immediate treatment, the infection could spread to the bone and cost the kitten his paw.
Fighting to Save a Paw
The staff named the kitten Boscoe, and despite the seriousness of his condition, they refused to give up. Caregivers began an intensive daily cleaning routine, carefully monitoring the wound as it slowly began to heal.
Once veterinarians confirmed the bone was still healthy, they performed surgery to repair the damage and prevent further infection. Nearly a month after his rescue, Boscoe’s paw healed—hairless but fully functional.
Healing Takes More Than Time

Although Boscoe’s physical injuries improved, his fear lingered. He remained withdrawn, retreating to his box whenever anyone came near. Staff began to wonder whether he would ever be ready for adoption.
To help him overcome his anxiety, SFACC’s cat behavior specialist began visiting Boscoe regularly. With patience—and plenty of food—the transformation began.
A Shy Kitten Comes Out of His Shell
Food proved to be the key to Boscoe’s heart. Within a week, he was rolling onto his back, purring, and leaning into gentle pets. Soon after, he could be found lounging at the front of his kennel, paw dangling out, eagerly waiting for visitors, toys, and treats.
Thanks to the dedication of behavior specialists and volunteers, Boscoe’s personality blossomed. But one challenge remained—finding him a home.
Overlooked No More
Black cats are often the last to be adopted, no matter how friendly they are. SFACC staff worried Boscoe might face the same fate. Still, they believed his perfect family was out there—and on October 26, that belief paid off.
Heather and her partner, Fred, arrived at the shelter searching for a companion for their 18-month-old cat, Nori. With a strong understanding of cat behavior, they specifically hoped to adopt a shy or overlooked kitten.
When they met Boscoe, they knew immediately he was the one.
A New Name and a New Life

Boscoe went home with Heather and Fred, who renamed him Mago. While they planned a slow introduction, Mago surprised them by settling in quickly.
Within a week, he was exploring the apartment, initiating play with Nori, and even jumping a baby gate to meet her. The two cats quickly became inseparable—playing, cuddling, and following each other everywhere.
A Happy Ending
Today, Nori and Mago are best friends. Nori has helped Mago gain confidence, while Mago has brought renewed playfulness into his older sister’s life.
As for Mago’s once-injured paw? The fur is growing back—and so is his future, now filled with comfort, companionship, and a forever home.
