“We weren’t supposed to be there. But we were.”
Kelly Holland thought she was simply making a quick stop at her new business in early October.
She was preparing for the opening of Cat’s Meow, a cat cafe and vintage shop, and hadn’t originally planned to be there that day. But an unexpected change of plans brought her to the storefront — and put her in exactly the right place at the right time.
Just beneath one of the shop’s windows, Holland spotted a tiny kitten curled up on a towel.
The kitten was dirty, exhausted and clearly in poor condition. He appeared to have been left there alone for some time, with no way of knowing when someone might notice him.

That made the timing especially fortunate.
The cafe wasn’t scheduled to officially open until October 23, meaning the storefront was not yet regularly occupied. Had Holland not stopped by that day, the kitten might have remained outside much longer.
Instead, she found him.
Holland was also uniquely prepared to handle the situation.
Along with running Cat’s Meow, she is involved with The Animal Rescue Alliance, an organization dedicated to helping animals in need. She immediately brought the kitten inside and began making sure he received proper care.
He was so weak that he barely responded when she picked him up.
Holland decided to name him Meowzer, a name inspired by the new shop. In an unexpected way, he became the first rescue connected to the business before its doors had even officially opened.
The following morning, Meowzer was taken to a veterinarian for a full examination and treatment.
He was noticeably underweight and extremely hungry, but with food, medical attention and plenty of care, his condition began to improve.

Day by day, the tiny kitten started getting stronger.
His arrival also offered an early glimpse of what Holland hopes the new cafe will become.
Once open, Cat’s Meow plans to work alongside The Animal Rescue Alliance to support animals who need help and, ultimately, connect them with loving homes.
No one expected that mission to begin before opening day.
The experience has also encouraged Holland to think about additional ways to protect animals who might be left near the storefront in the future.

When possible, the business hopes to install a security system so the area outside can be monitored. While it may be impossible to prevent every case of animal abandonment, better surveillance could help ensure that an animal left outside is discovered as quickly as possible.
For Meowzer, an unlucky beginning turned into an unexpected second chance.
Thanks to Holland arriving at exactly the right moment, he is now safe, recovering and receiving the attention he needs.
As his health continues to improve, the little kitten will eventually be ready for the next chapter — finding a permanent family of his own.
