Not who they were expecting πŸ˜‚

One day last year, Silja and Phil Torres noticed something unusual while watching their daughter, Atlis, play in the backyard of their Washington home.

From a distance, it sounded as though she was carrying on a full conversation. Since no one else appeared to be nearby, her parents assumed she was simply talking to herself.

Phil soon realized there was more going on.

He could hear Atlis chatting from the doorway and noticed that she kept looking down toward the ground as if someone β€” or something β€” had her complete attention.

When her parents walked closer, they discovered Atlis wasn’t speaking to an imaginary friend, a doll or a toy.

Her conversation partner was a tiny slug perched on top of a mushroom.

The scene immediately charmed her parents. Atlis seemed completely absorbed in the encounter, treating the little creature as though the two were old friends sharing an afternoon together.

To her, the backyard had seemingly transformed into a miniature fantasy world where forest creatures could understand every word she said.

At one point, Atlis even offered the slug an imaginary boat, inviting her tiny companion to climb aboard before singing part of β€œRow, Row, Row Your Boat.”

What made the moment especially adorable was how natural the conversation appeared.

Atlis didn’t seem to think she was speaking to a silent animal. She interacted with the slug as though it were participating right along with her.

Silja joked that the whole scene felt a little like something out of β€œDr. Dolittle,” as if her daughter had somehow discovered the secret ability to communicate with animals.

Although the encounter was memorable, Atlis’ parents weren’t particularly shocked by her fascination with the slug.

She has been drawn to animals and the natural world since she was very young. Instead of ignoring creatures that some people might find strange or uninteresting, Atlis tends to stop, observe them and interact with them.

Her parents have encouraged that curiosity from the beginning.

Phil described his daughter as having a special connection with nature, noting that talking to animals has become a normal part of the way she explores the world around her.

That connection is also one of the reasons the family chose to leave New York City and move to Washington several years ago.

They wanted their children to have more opportunities to spend time outdoors, discover wildlife and develop a meaningful relationship with nature.
