“The vet said that’s a rare condition …”
Last month, the team at Do Good Rescue received word about a dog who had been abandoned at a nearby campground in Solca, Romania. Without hesitation, they headed out to find her.
What they discovered surprised them.
A Friendly Welcome — And A Hidden Surprise
Despite being left behind, the dog greeted the rescuers immediately, tail wagging and eager for affection.
“When we arrived, she came to greet us immediately,” staff member Elisa Dumitrescu shared.
As Dumitrescu offered food and water, she heard faint sounds coming from an abandoned shed nearby. At first, she paused to listen more closely. Then she recognized the unmistakable sound of newborn puppies crying.
The mama dog gently led the rescuers inside.
Three Tiny Lives In Need Of Help
Inside the shed, three tiny puppies lay huddled together on the ground. Their eyes were still closed, meaning they were likely less than a week old.
The team knew the fragile babies needed warmth and medical care immediately. Fortunately, their protective mom understood they were there to help.
“The mama let me touch them and even let me pick them up,” Dumitrescu said.
The family was quickly transported back to the shelter for a full health check.
The Curious Case Of The Green Puppy
At the shelter, veterinarians confirmed that all four dogs were healthy. However, one puppy stood out for an unusual reason.
“I noticed that one of the babies had a different color,” Dumitrescu said. “He was green.”
While the sight was initially concerning, vets explained that green-colored puppies, though rare, are completely harmless. The tint happens when bile pigments from the mother’s placenta mix with the amniotic fluid before birth.
“The green color comes from the mom’s womb, but it goes away,” Dumitrescu explained.
Over time, the puppy’s fur will gradually lighten to its natural shade.
Safe, Warm And Ready For The Future
For now, the mama dog and her three babies are resting comfortably at the shelter. They’ll remain in care until the puppies grow strong enough to be adopted.
Given how friendly their mom is — and how adorable the little ones are — rescuers feel confident they’ll find loving forever homes very soon.
What began as an abandonment story at a lonely campground has turned into a hopeful new chapter for one brave mama and her remarkable pups.
