They’d been waiting for help all night.
What started as an ordinary morning at an animal shelter turned into an unexpected rescue when a staff member discovered a mysterious cardboard box outside the entrance. What was hidden inside left everyone concerned for the lives of four helpless cats.
An employee at the RSPCA Canterbury and District Branch had just arrived for work when they noticed a cardboard box sitting near the shelter’s gate.
At first glance, it looked like a regular delivery package. But as the worker approached, they noticed something unusual. The box had been tightly taped shut, with only a handful of small holes punched through the cardboard.
When they opened it, they discovered a frightened mother cat and her three tiny kittens trapped inside.
Mother Cat and Kittens Abandoned Overnight
The shelter worker immediately brought the little family indoors, where staff could examine them and make sure they were safe.
There was no food or water inside the box, and the limited ventilation raised serious concerns about how long the animals had been trapped.
Hoping to understand what had happened, shelter staff reviewed footage from the security cameras outside the building.

What they discovered was heartbreaking.
The mother cat and her kittens had been left outside the shelter at approximately 12:50 a.m. They had spent the entire night confined inside the cardboard box, unable to escape.
Fortunately, the employee found them before the situation became even more dangerous.
Despite their frightening experience, all four cats survived and were safely placed under the care of the RSPCA.
Four Black Cats Get Special Halloween-Inspired Names
The rescued family consisted of a beautiful black mother cat and her three equally adorable kittens.
Because they were discovered in October, shelter staff decided to give them names inspired by the Halloween season.
The four cats were named Tricksy, Hexie, Jinksie, and Spookie.
Their playful names brought a little happiness to an otherwise upsetting situation.
With a warm, safe environment, regular meals, and caring shelter staff looking after them, the little family finally had a chance to recover from their ordeal.
Why Black Cats Often Struggle to Find Homes

While the rescue had a happy outcome, the story also highlighted a bigger problem affecting black cats in animal shelters.
According to figures shared by the RSPCA at the time, black cats made up a significant portion of the cats in its care. They could also spend up to three times longer waiting for adoption than cats with other coat colours.
Some potential adopters overlook black cats because of outdated superstitions, while others believe their dark fur makes them harder to photograph.
Unfortunately, these misconceptions can make it more difficult for affectionate, healthy black cats to find loving families.
The RSPCA used National Black Cat Day to encourage people to look beyond coat colour and consider giving a black cat a forever home.
Black cats can be just as playful, loyal, affectionate, and full of personality as any other cat.
A Second Chance for a Mother Cat and Her Kittens
After spending an entire night abandoned in a sealed cardboard box, Tricksy, Hexie, Jinksie, and Spookie were finally somewhere safe.
The shelter’s priority was helping the mother cat and her kittens regain their strength and recover from the stressful experience.
At the time of the rescue, the RSPCA planned to make the cats available for adoption once they were healthy and ready for their next chapter.
Their story serves as a reminder of how important animal shelters and rescue workers are to vulnerable pets.
Every abandoned animal deserves safety, kindness, and a chance at a loving home. For this mother cat and her three kittens, that second chance began when one observant shelter worker stopped to investigate what appeared to be an ordinary cardboard box.
