She was left in the woods at night.
What started as an ordinary late-night call for an animal control officer in Willow Springs, Illinois, quickly turned into a heartbreaking rescue.
While responding to a call, the officer suddenly heard something unusual coming from a nearby wooded area.
It was the faint sound of a little dog barking.
Concerned, the officer followed the cries toward the entrance of a dark park, where something strange caught their attention.
Lying on the ground was an abandoned Bud Light cardboard box.
But this wasn’t just an ordinary piece of discarded trash.
The box was moving.
As the officer approached and pointed a flashlight toward it, they noticed something that made their heart sink.
A tiny brown nose was poking through an opening.
There was a living animal trapped inside.
Upon closer inspection, the officer discovered a small, wire-haired dog confined inside the taped-up cardboard box.
The frightened pup was trembling and barking desperately, seemingly unsure whether the stranger approaching her was there to help.
She had been left in an especially dangerous place, surrounded by woods and close to a dark road.
β[It was] in the woods, near a very dark road, where the coyotes hunt,β The Abandoned of Cook County shared on Facebook.
The little dog’s situation could have turned tragic if nobody had heard her cries.
Thankfully, the officer wasn’t about to leave her behind.
Despite her initial fear and defensive behavior, the officer carefully rescued the frightened pup and brought her to safety.
She was soon given a name: Suzie.
But getting her out of the box was only the beginning of her journey.
The officer transported Suzie to the South Suburban Humane Society, where shelter staff immediately began assessing her condition.
And what they discovered was heartbreaking.
Although Suzie was wearing a flea collar, her tiny body was suffering from a severe flea infestation.
βSuzie was COVERED in fleas,β a shelter representative told The Dodo. βBecause of that, she is dealing with skin issues and hair loss.β

The poor dog was uncomfortable, frightened and desperately in need of care.
Shelter workers gently bathed her and carefully combed through her fur, helping remove the fleas and soothe her irritated skin.
For the first time since her terrifying ordeal, Suzie could finally rest somewhere warm and safe.
After a peaceful night in her kennel, the little dog’s recovery began.
But rescuers soon discovered another heartbreaking detail about Suzie.
She wasn’t a young puppy.
She was actually a senior dog who had already spent many years of her life depending on people for love and protection.
βWe estimate this beautiful girl to be around 8 years old!β the shelter shared. βShe’s scared, but she’s doing well, and we cannot wait to see her transformation!β
Although Suzie remained understandably nervous, her caregivers could already see signs of progress.
With every gentle interaction, she was being given another opportunity to learn that people could be trusted.
And just a few days after her rescue, some wonderful news arrived.
Suzie was finally healthy enough to leave the shelter and move into a loving foster home.
There, she would have a quiet place to recover, receive the attention she needed and begin putting her frightening experience behind her.
Nobody knows exactly why Suzie was abandoned or who left her trapped inside that cardboard box.
But her rescuers are determined to make sure that her future looks nothing like her past.

Once she’s fully recovered, they hope to find her a permanent family who will cherish her and give her the safe, happy life she deserves.
For now, Suzie can finally rest without fear, surrounded by people who genuinely care about her.
And while her journey toward a forever home is just beginning, one thing is certain.
That tiny nose poking out of a cardboard box led the right person to her β and may have saved her life. β€οΈ
