It was National Cat Day, so the Buffalo Bills had a question. What is that loose flap of skin under a catβs belly? Their players tried to answer it on camera.
What the Players Learned About the Primordial Pouch
Youβve seen it. When a cat trots across the room, something swings underneath. Thatβs the primordial pouch, and itβs a normal part of feline anatomy. People often mistake it for extra weight, but it isnβt belly fat.
Experts think the pouch may protect a catβs abdomen. It may also give cats more room to stretch when they run and jump.
On October 29, the team posted a TikTok video. First, the players learned about the pouch. Then they guessed why cats have one.
Outside linebacker Javon Solomon went with what he knows best. βI think maybe itβs for protection, just like how my pads protect me when I play football,β he said.
Offensive guard OβCyrus Torrence played narrator, and he shared another theory. βAnother theory is the extra loose skin allows cats to extend their bodies more freely when sprinting, leaping and punching,β he said.
Nobody in the clip acts like an expert, and thatβs part of the charm. Instead, the players just seem curious.
This Isnβt the Billsβ First Animal Moment
At training camp, rescue puppies came to visit. They were brought by Cleft Rescue Unit, an organization that helps vulnerable animals. The puppies cuddled with the players and explored the room, which made for a nice break from practice.
Tight end Dalton Kincaid had the line of the day. βThe dog chooses you, you donβt choose the dog,β he said.
Fans loved those clips. So a lesson on cat anatomy felt like a fun next step.
Even Non-Football Fans Noticed
The video reached people who donβt follow football at all. For example, one viewer wrote, βIβm now a Buffalo Bills supporter (from a rural town in Australia and never seen an NFL game in my life).β
Still, not bad for a video about loose cat skin.
