Officials in the Republic of Ireland are appealing for information after a much-loved stag from a protected herd was illegally killed at Newbridge Demesne in Donabate, north County Dublin.
Staff from Fingal County Council discovered the animal early Thursday morning when they arrived to care for the herd. The stag — one of only two Irish Red Deer males living in the park — had been killed overnight by intruders who forced their way into the grounds.
Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that the stag’s head was removed and taken from the area, with staff believing it was stolen as a trophy.
Gardaí, the national police force, have launched an investigation into what has been described as a serious wildlife crime. The National Parks and Wildlife Service is also involved in the inquiry.
“He was a beautiful animal,” said Ivan Smith, foreman at Newbridge House and Traditional Farm. “The whole team is devastated. He was well-known and very popular with visitors who regularly stopped to see him.”
The eight-year-old stag was a familiar sight to families who walked the trails around the historic estate. Local leaders and animal welfare advocates expressed shock and outrage over the incident.
Tom O’Leary, Mayor of Fingal, said he was saddened on behalf of the community. “My granddaughters adored seeing the deer up close. It’s appalling that someone would do this,” he said, urging anyone with information to speak to authorities. “Killing deer without the proper license is illegal, and I hope those responsible are held accountable.”
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Ireland also condemned the act. Pat Watt of the NSPCA described the killing as “unacceptable and deeply distressing,” adding that the organization hopes for swift justice.
Local councillor Eoghan Dockrell said residents are “disgusted and appalled,” and noted that council officials are reviewing security and nighttime patrols in the park.
Authorities are asking for public assistance, including any video footage from the area surrounding Newbridge Demesne between 12:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, particularly along the R126 road, Cobbe’s Lane and Turvey Avenue.
