In Sweden, a young wild otter has never forgotten the person who helped her survive. Even after returning to her lake home, she still seeks him out — often hopping onto his kayak to relax and play.
The friendship began when Mats Janzon was walking near the forest close to his house. He heard a faint sound and followed it to discover a tiny otter pup, alone and struggling to breathe. He waited and watched for hours, hoping the pup’s mother would return. Later, he learned that the mother had been struck by a car, leaving the young otter with no chance of survival unless someone stepped in.
The pup was small enough to fit in his palm. Although Janzon had never cared for an otter before, he took her home and provided round-the-clock care. Gradually, the little otter grew stronger — and she clearly trusted her new caretaker. She followed him from room to room, sometimes curling up in his lap like a puppy.
Janzon described the bond as both surprising and meaningful. “The first time she let me gently pet her, I couldn’t believe it,” he said in an interview with SoulPaws Tails. “It felt amazing that a wild animal chose to feel safe with me.”
As she recovered, Janzon knew he needed to help her relearn life in the wild. He created a shallow pool in his yard so she could practice swimming, and before long, she was ready for the lake again. He named her Leya.
At first, Leya seemed unsure about the open water. But soon instincts kicked in — she explored farther on each visit until she was comfortable living independently once more.
Even though she’s wild again, Leya still checks in. When Janzon paddles out in his bright yellow kayak, Leya often appears beside him, climbing aboard for a quick cuddle and a ride around the lake. He shares many of these joyful moments on TikTok, where people around the world follow their story.
“She’s incredibly playful and curious,” Janzon said. “Every visit feels like a gift.”
