“It was so beautiful.”

A Passion for Nature

As a devoted nature lover and animal enthusiast, Megan Jacobs is always eager to immerse herself in the natural world. Living in Tasmania, Australia, she frequently captures these moments and shares them online, giving people around the world a glimpse into the wildlife and landscapes she encounters.

A Curious Shape on the Shore

While walking along the beach at Mount William National Park on Tasmania’s northeast coast, Jacobs noticed something unusual resting on a rock near the shoreline. At first glance, it looked like nothing more than a tangled clump of kelp washed ashore by the tide.

A Surprising Discovery

Moments later, the “kelp” began to move. To her amazement, Jacobs realized it was actually a small gray seal pup curled up on the rock.

“It was so beautiful,” Jacobs told The Dodo. “I’ve always dreamed of randomly coming across a seal on the beach — I just never thought it would actually happen.”

A Quiet Moment Shared

Keeping a respectful distance, Jacobs watched as the seal appeared to settle in after leaving the water. He yawned, scratched himself and eventually drifted off into a peaceful nap.

“I was the only person there,” Jacobs said. “It was just me and the seal.”

Why Seals Rest on Land

According to Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, seals sometimes haul themselves out of the water to rest, molt, mate or give birth. While they spend most of their lives at sea, encountering a seal on land isn’t necessarily a cause for concern.

Wildlife experts note that the greatest dangers facing Tasmanian seals aren’t natural predators, but human-related threats such as illegal hunting and plastic pollution. Officials encourage people to dispose of waste responsibly and give seals plenty of space when encountered.

Leaving with Gratitude

Jacobs made sure not to disturb the seal and left no trace behind as she continued her walk. The seal returned to his nap, seemingly content and undisturbed.

“I truly wish you the very best,” Jacobs later wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for sharing that brief, special moment with me.”

The encounter left her feeling grateful — a reminder of how magical nature can be when given the respect it deserves.
