A Mysterious Trail in the Snow
One winter morning in Scotland, Eileen and Paul Swan noticed something unusual outside their home. A strange trail cut through nearly nine inches of fresh snow, and the couple couldn’t figure out what animal had made it. Curious and concerned, they decided to follow the tracks to see where they led.
An Unexpected Discovery
The snowy trail ended at the feeding station the Swans had set up in their yard. For the past three years, the couple had been helping local hedgehogs by providing food and water. There, curled up and barely moving, was a hedgehog who clearly needed help.
The hedgehog, later named Brora, had forced himself through the deep snow in search of nourishment. After managing to eat and drink a small amount, he collapsed from exhaustion, unable to go any further.
A Dangerous Sign During Hibernation
Hedgehogs normally hibernate through winter, conserving energy by entering a deep sleep. They rarely wake unless something is seriously wrong. Seeing Brora awake in freezing conditions immediately signaled to the Swans that his situation was critical.
“He was extremely thin, dehydrated and cold when they found him,” said Jane Wilson, center manager at Highland Wildlife Rescue. “With the deep snow and sub-zero temperatures, he had no energy left and very little chance of surviving on his own.”
Life-Saving Care at the Rescue Center
Brora was quickly transferred to Highland Wildlife Rescue, where staff began treatment right away. Examinations revealed that he was severely underweight and suffering from parasites, explaining why he had been struggling to survive.
Rescuers placed him in a warm environment and provided fluids, medication and high-protein meals to help rebuild his strength, muscle mass and stamina.
A Hopeful Road to Recovery
Thanks to the Swans’ decision to investigate the mysterious trail, Brora was found just in time. With proper care, he has made remarkable progress and continues to grow stronger each day.
“We hope to return him to his natural home in the spring,” Wilson said, “so he can resume his life in the wild.”
What began as a puzzling set of tracks in the snow ultimately became a life-saving rescue — proof that paying attention can make all the difference.
