It’s amazing they noticed her.

Aly Medina, part of the pet mutual aid team at Chicago’s One Tail At A Time, is always on the lookout for animals in need.

Recently, while driving through a rural section of the South Side near a train overpass, she noticed a pair of fearful eyes peering out from a tree trunk beside the road.

It was Maya, a small black dog clearly in distress. Medina immediately pulled over and approached carefully.

Over the next few months, during the peak of summer, Medina returned repeatedly, patiently earning Maya’s trust. She left out food and water, never using traps or rushing the process, letting the timid pup become comfortable at her own pace.

With assistance from Chicago Animal Care and Control, Medina was finally able to guide Maya into a carrier. The rescuers smiled as the little dog was safely transported to a city shelter for the required three-day stray hold.

Once that hold ended, Maya went home with Medina and began her transition from rescued dog to foster pup. At first, she was unsure of everything, but having Medina nearby helped her feel secure.

As the days passed, Maya grew more confident and bonded with Medina’s mom, who quickly fell in love with the playful and quirky dog.

Soon after, the adoption became official. Maya had found her forever home.

β€œThis little one traded her tree trunk for a forever home,” said One Tail At A Time. β€œShe’s thriving, and we’re so happy she’ll get to live a happy, safe life.”
