When Lousi Mokhtarians heard that someone had discovered a tiny, fur-covered animal barely holding on in a pile of garbage, she immediately rushed out to help. When she arrived and spotted the fragile creature — a nearly unconscious rabbit lying among the trash — her heart broke.
“He was taking the faintest breaths,” Mokhtarians told The Dodo. “It was clear that if we didn’t act fast, he wouldn’t make it.”
With two beloved rabbits at home, Mokhtarians could hardly believe what she was seeing. The idea that someone had simply discarded the little bunny, whom she later named Lumos, was almost too painful to process. It was unlikely he had gotten there by himself.
“It was a truly devastating sight,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine anyone doing this to such a defenseless animal.”

Without hesitation, she gently lifted the cold, limp rabbit into her arms and wrapped him in her sweater to warm him. Then she raced to the nearest vet clinic.
There, she learned just how critical his condition was.
“Lumos was suffering from severe hypothermia and was extremely weak,” she said. “He couldn’t stand or hop — whether from the freezing temperatures or past injuries, we didn’t know. It was heartbreaking.”
Despite being medically fragile, Lumos was surrounded by a devoted veterinary team who cared for him around the clock. Slowly, he regained enough strength to leave the clinic — and go home permanently with Mokhtarians.
He was still frail and deeply withdrawn, but Mokhtarians had a feeling that meeting her two rabbits might help him heal emotionally as well as physically.
Soon after settling him in, she introduced Lumos to Blanco and Bolo — and what happened next amazed her.
“I bonded him with my other two bunnies, and they immediately became his protectors,” she said. “They guided him, comforted him and helped him rebuild his confidence.”

Blanco and Bolo were exactly what Lumos needed. Under their care and companionship, the once silent and motionless bunny began to transform. His sadness lifted, and his energy returned. Before long, Lumos went from barely moving at all to doing joyful “binkies,” the exuberant jumps that rabbits perform when they’re truly happy.

According to Special Bunny Rabbit Rescue, binkies can be anything from small head flicks to huge midair spins — and Lumos was suddenly doing them nonstop.

Seeing Lumos so full of life filled Mokhtarians with gratitude.

“I like to believe he realized he was getting a second chance,” she said. “He gets to enjoy his life now — with two best friends at his side.”
Two years after being rescued from the brink of death, Lumos is thriving. The Good Samaritan who reported him, the fast-acting vet team and Mokhtarians’ compassion all came together to give him the future he deserved — and Blanco and Bolo gained a new brother.

“I’m still amazed and so thankful for this little miracle,” Mokhtarians shared on Instagram. “He was meant to be part of our family, and we love him beyond words.”
