When The Big House Cats rescue received a message from a worried relative about an extremely overweight cat, they immediately wanted to learn more. The cat, Bandit, had been living in the family’s basement because he didn’t get along with their dogs. As time went on, his care slipped through the cracks, and the family finally realized he needed more help than they could give.

Although the rescue was already at capacity, they knew Bandit couldn’t wait. They arranged an emergency foster and brought him in β€” and were stunned by what they saw. Thick, painful mats covered his entire body, to the point where he hardly resembled a cat.

β€œIt was the worst matting we’ve ever seen on a short-haired cat,” Kristine Seguin from The Big House Cats told The Dodo. β€œThe mats were so tight he could barely move.”

Before anything else, Bandit needed to be freed from the tangled fur weighing him down. A veterinarian sedated him and spent nearly an hour shaving away the heavy mats. When the grooming was complete, Bandit looked like a completely different animal.

Once he woke up from sedation and returned to the rescue, he struggled a bit with walking β€” likely because his muscles had been restricted for so long.

β€œWith all that tight matting gone, his body suddenly had freedom it wasn’t used to,” Seguin explained. β€œBut after a few days, he was already moving more easily and comfortably.”

As Bandit settled in, the rescuers began to see his personality shine through. He seemed noticeably happier, far more relaxed, and ready to enjoy his new life. They’re confident he’ll feel even better as he slowly works toward a healthier weight.

β€œHe’s doing wonderfully β€” incredibly gentle, affectionate, and calm,” Seguin said. β€œHe loves being petted, playing with the other cats, and curling up in his new bed.”

Once the rescue confirms that Bandit is losing weight safely, he’ll be cleared for adoption. His caretakers are excited for the day he finds a family who will cherish him.

β€œWe’re grateful his former family reached out,” Seguin said. β€œNow he has a chance at the happy, healthy life he deserves.”
