When Wisconsin state trooper Brody Schmitz stopped to help a driver near an I-90 ramp, he expected a routine roadside call. Instead, he heard something heartbreaking.

The driver told him she had just seen someone throw kittens from a moving vehicle.

Schmitz searched the area, but the vehicle responsible was not found. Thankfully, one tiny kitten was discovered nearby. The little tuxedo kitten had somehow survived the terrifying ordeal.

Because Schmitz was still on duty, he took the kitten to a nearby animal shelter so staff could care for him safely until his shift was over. But before leaving, he made one thing clear: he wanted to adopt him.

Schmitz later named the kitten Toby and brought him home, even carrying the tiny cat in his arms — and at one point, tucked sweetly in his hat.

When the Wisconsin State Patrol shared the story online, people quickly filled the comments with love and their own unexpected rescue stories. Many joked that the “cat distribution system” had worked its magic again.

For Toby, a frightening moment on the highway led to a new beginning. And for Trooper Schmitz, what started as a normal call became the day he met his newest family member.
