When rescuers first examined Valkyrie, they immediately realized just how desperately she needed medical attention.
The brown pit bull was alarmingly thin, with nearly every bone visible beneath her skin.
For a dog of her age and build, rescuers estimated she should have weighed approximately 50 pounds. Instead, the scale revealed a shocking number: just 33 pounds.
“She’s so skinny that you can see all of her ribs, her hip bones … her skull is even sunken in by her eyes,” the rescue organization shared in a Facebook update.
Her fragile appearance was enough to break the hearts of the shelter’s caregivers. But the true extent of what she had endured became even clearer during her medical examination.

Nobody at the rescue center knew exactly where Valkyrie had come from or how long she had been surviving without proper care.

While undergoing her initial examination, Valkyrie began vomiting pieces of trash and plastic, showing the rescuers just how desperate her search for food had become.
“When she arrived, she was throwing up garbage, pieces of plastic … she was eating anything she could find on the streets to try to find some calories,” SRSL explained.
“It is clear that no one has cared for her or about her in a very long time.”

Beyond her extreme weight loss, Valkyrie was suffering from several other health problems.
Her body was covered with fleas, her nails had grown painfully long, and veterinarians discovered a mammary mass that required medical attention.
The physical signs of neglect were heartbreaking, but her emotional condition was equally concerning.
The frightened pit bull appeared withdrawn and unsure of the people trying to help her.
Then, one tender moment changed everything.

During Valkyrie’s examination, SRSL veterinarian Dr. Ortiz approached her with kindness and reassurance.

Then Dr. Ortiz leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on Valkyrie’s nose.

“She was unsure of us [at] first, but started to lean into affection in no time at all,” SRSL shared. “She craves it.”
