What started as an ordinary evening shift at Costco Wholesale turned into an unexpected animal rescue when an employee discovered something unusual inside a seemingly forgotten shopping cart.
At first glance, the cart appeared to contain nothing more than a blue pet carrier. But when the worker approached, he realized a frightened cat was sitting inside, completely alone.
The discovery was upsetting enough. However, a handwritten message on the carrier made the situation even more heartbreaking.
Costco Worker Spots a Mysterious Pet Carrier in an Empty Shopping Cart
Wilson was wrapping up his evening shift at Costco when a shopping cart parked in an unusual location caught his attention.
Inside was a blue mesh pet carrier, with no owner anywhere in sight.
As someone who shared his home with three cats, Wilson immediately recognized the carrier and wondered why it had been left unattended.
“My first reaction, honestly, was confusion,” Wilson recalled. “I’m thinking, ‘Why is there a cat here? Why is my home life at my work? Why am I excited? Wait, what happened?’ all at the same time.”
He hurried over to investigate, concerned about the animal inside.
That’s when he spotted something written on the side of the carrier.
Handwritten Message Reveals the Cat’s Name and Age
As Wilson examined the carrier more closely, he noticed a short message written in black marker.
The words revealed two important details about the unexpected visitor.
Her name was Misty, and she was already 14 years old.
“I checked the carrier bag and noticed there was ‘Misty 14 [years]’ written in Sharpie on the back side,” Wilson recalled.
The realization that someone had apparently left an elderly cat behind made the discovery even more troubling.
Misty was a black-and-orange calico who appeared confused and frightened as Wilson looked into her carrier.
She was wearing a little blue sweater and a harness, suggesting that she had once been accustomed to human care.
Yet somehow, this senior cat had ended up alone in a shopping cart inside the store’s garage bay.
Nobody knew exactly who had left Misty there or why.
But Wilson knew one thing for certain: he wasn’t going to ignore her.
Kindhearted Employee Creates a Temporary Home for Frightened Cat
While other Costco employees tried to find a manager and determine what to do, Wilson focused on making Misty feel comfortable.
Having three cats of his own, he understood how stressful an unfamiliar environment could be for a frightened animal.
“I have three black cats at home,” Wilson explained. “Everyone was figuring out what to do, people were going to find managers, etc. So for some time, the cat was just with me, and I thought, ‘Why don’t I make her a mini home while she’s here?’”
With that idea in mind, Wilson began transforming the shopping cart into a temporary shelter.
He lined the cart with two pieces of foam board and created a makeshift litter area using a black garbage bag and cat litter he had purchased for his pets.
Then he opened a can of wet cat food, hoping the smell might encourage Misty to eat.
He carefully unzipped her carrier, giving her the opportunity to come out whenever she felt ready.
But the senior cat was understandably hesitant.
Rather than stepping outside, Misty remained tucked inside the familiar carrier, uncertain about everything happening around her.
Wilson didn’t pressure her.
Instead, he stayed nearby, making sure she had food, a safe place to rest, and someone looking after her.
Animal Shelter Steps In to Help Abandoned 14-Year-Old Cat
As Wilson kept Misty company, his coworkers contacted a local animal welfare organization for assistance.
Eventually, Animal Care Centers of NYC (NYCACC) agreed to welcome the abandoned cat and provide the care she needed.
Although Wilson had quickly grown attached to Misty, adopting her himself wasn’t a practical option.
His home was already occupied by three beloved cats named Zorra, Reynard, and Power.
Fortunately, several of his coworkers were interested in potentially giving Misty a permanent home.
“A few of our coworkers may offer to adopt Misty, and some of us plan to stop by the shelter to see her regardless,” Wilson shared in an Instagram comment.
That meant the senior calico might soon have another chance to experience the comfort of a loving family.
Senior Cat Gets a Second Chance After Being Left Behind
Following her rescue, Misty was placed in the care of NYCACC, where she could rest and recover from the stressful experience.
According to the original rescue update, the elderly cat was doing well and was expected to become available for adoption within a few days.
Although her future adopter had not yet been confirmed, Misty’s situation was already much brighter than it had been when Wilson first discovered her.
Instead of remaining alone in a shopping cart, she was now receiving attention from people determined to help her.
And with potential adopters already expressing interest, there was reason to hope that she would soon find a safe, permanent home.
A Simple Act of Kindness Makes All the Difference
Wilson never expected his evening shift at Costco to end with an abandoned cat rescue.
But when he saw Misty sitting alone in her carrier, his love for his own pets inspired him to act.
“Seeing Misty reminded me of home and my cats, Zorra, Reynard and Power, and I just wanted to help out,” Wilson said.
His thoughtful actions transformed a frightening situation into an opportunity for a new beginning.
Misty’s story also serves as a reminder that senior cats deserve compassion, security, and loving homes just as much as younger animals.
At 14 years old, Misty may have faced an uncertain future when she was left behind, but thanks to one observant Costco employee and his caring coworkers, she was given another chance.
And sometimes, all it takes to change an animal’s life is one person who refuses to walk away.
