β€œThe wind was whipping up on the second story, with no walls to protect him” 😰

A frigid wind swept through St. Louis, Missouri, last week as animal rescuer Donna Lochmann searched the streets for homeless dogs ahead of a historic snowstorm. Then she spotted him β€” a brown-and-white pit bull peering out from the second floor of an abandoned house.

Her heart immediately sank.

β€œHe went up those steep steps, then was too scared to come back down,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) shared. β€œThe wind was whipping up on the second story, with no walls to protect him.”

A Neighbor’s Call Saves His Life

The frightened dog was hiding in a dilapidated building and could have easily gone unnoticed. But a nearby neighbor saw him and contacted SRSL, guiding rescuers straight to the house.

As SRSL’s chief lifesaving officer, Lochmann has rescued countless dogs from abandoned properties β€” but this one felt especially urgent due to the brutal weather.

β€œWe were only there for about 10 minutes, but we couldn’t feel our hands or fingers by the time we leashed him up,” SRSL said. β€œIt was super windy up on that second level.”

Trapped, Frozen, and Too Afraid to Move

With more dogs still out there and the storm closing in fast, the rescue team had only minutes to act. They carefully climbed the crumbling staircase and found the dog frozen in fear, unsure how to get back down.

At first, he wouldn’t come when called.

But with patience and gentle encouragement, he finally stepped forward β€” and Lochmann slipped a leash over his head.

They named him Snow Mageddon.

From Abandoned to Safe and Warm

Snow Mageddon was rushed to SRSL’s veterinary clinic, where he received a full medical checkup before being wrapped in warm blankets.

β€œWe rescued him a few hours ago, and he has been sound asleep ever since,” SRSL wrote. β€œHe is going to be warm and safe tonight.”

For the first time in who knows how long, Snow Mageddon could finally rest.

A Foster Family Falls in Love

As the storm worsened, SRSL urgently asked the community for foster homes. A couple named Kara and Dan saw Snow Mageddon’s story and volunteered to take him in for a week.

It didn’t take long for them to fall completely in love.

β€œWe didn’t know this dog would end up being everything a potential owner could want,” they wrote. β€œAlthough he’s only been with us less than 48 hours, it’s clear he’s going to make someone very happy.”

A Perfect Dog Still Waiting for His Forever Home

Snow Mageddon will soon return to the shelter, but his foster parents β€” and the entire rescue team β€” are confident his forever family is out there.

β€œSnow Mageddon is going to make a perfect pet for someone soon,” Kara and Dan said.
β€œHe deserves the best.”

From freezing in an abandoned house to sleeping safely in a warm home, Snow Mageddon’s life changed in just one rescue β€” and his happiest chapter is still ahead. πŸΎβ„οΈπŸ’›
