The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) is asking homeowners to place shallow bowls of fresh water in gardens and green spaces, where wildlife can safely drink as natural water sources become increasingly scarce.
Even a single bowl of clean water can help animals survive prolonged periods of extreme heat.
Fresh Water Can Be a Lifeline
During long dry spells, ponds, puddles, and other natural water sources often disappear, leaving hedgehogs and many other animals struggling to stay hydrated.
The charity recommends using a shallow dish filled with fresh water and placing it in a cool, shaded area.
To make the water accessible for even more wildlife, adding a few small pebbles creates safe landing spots for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects while they drink.

“With temperatures remaining high and natural water sources drying up, even the smallest action can make a huge difference. A shallow dish of clean water placed in a shady spot could save a hedgehog’s life.”
Creating a Wildlife-Friendly Garden
The charity also recommends making gardens as welcoming as possible for wildlife throughout the summer.
Helpful changes include:
- Installing wildlife-friendly ponds with gently sloping edges.
- Leaving shaded areas where animals can escape the heat.
- Keeping log piles, leaf piles, and wild corners instead of clearing everything away, as these provide shelter during hot weather.
These simple habitats benefit hedgehogs as well as birds, frogs, insects, and many other species.
Hedgehog Numbers Remain Under Pressure
The appeal comes at a time when Britain’s hedgehog population continues to face significant challenges.
According to the State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report, produced by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, rural hedgehog populations have declined by between 30% and 75% since 2000.
While some urban populations are beginning to recover, gardens remain one of the most important refuges for these much-loved animals.
