As hot, dry weather continues across much of the UK, wildlife experts are asking people to make a few simple changes that could make a big difference for hedgehogs and other garden animals.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) is encouraging households to place shallow bowls of fresh water in gardens and other green spaces, where wild animals can safely stop for a drink during periods of extreme heat.
With natural water sources drying up, even a small dish of clean water can become a lifeline.
Fresh Water Is More Important Than Ever
Extended spells of warm, dry weather make it increasingly difficult for hedgehogs to find the water they need to survive.
To help even more wildlife, the charity recommends adding a few small pebbles to water dishes. These give bees, butterflies, and other insects a safe place to land while drinking, preventing them from slipping into the water.
Experts also advise placing bowls in shaded areas and replacing the water with fresh supplies every day.
Food Can Help Hedgehogs Through Dry Conditions
Hot weather doesn’t just reduce access to waterβit also makes finding food more challenging.
Dry ground limits the availability of insects and other natural food sources that hedgehogs rely on.
For people who already feed hedgehogs, BHPS recommends offering:
- Meaty hedgehog food
- Meaty cat or dog food
- Dry cat biscuits
These foods can provide valuable nutrition while natural food is harder to find.
Small Actions Can Make a Big Difference
According to Fay Vass, Chief Executive of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, simple acts of kindness can have a significant impact.
βExtreme heat and drought can have devastating consequences for hedgehogs and other wildlife. Without access to fresh water, many animals face dehydration, exhaustion and, in some cases, death.
βWith temperatures remaining high and natural water sources drying up, even the smallest action can make a huge difference. A shallow dish of clean water placed in a shady spot could save a hedgehog’s life.β
Creating a Wildlife-Friendly Garden
The charity also encourages homeowners to make their gardens more welcoming for wildlife throughout the summer.
Helpful steps include:
- Creating wildlife-friendly ponds with gently sloping edges.
- Leaving shaded areas where animals can cool down.
- Keeping log piles, leaf piles, and wild corners that provide shelter during hot weather.
These natural habitats offer protection not only for hedgehogs but also for frogs, insects, birds, and many other garden species.
Hedgehog Populations Continue to Decline
The appeal comes as hedgehog populations remain under significant pressure across Britain.
According to the State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report, produced by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, rural hedgehog populations have declined by between 30% and 75% since 2000.
Although some urban populations have shown encouraging signs of recovery, experts say private gardens remain one of the most important refuges for these iconic animals.
Every Garden Can Help
Helping wildlife doesn’t require expensive equipment or major changes.
A shallow bowl of fresh water, some suitable food, and a cool, sheltered place to rest can make a remarkable difference for hedgehogs and many other animals during periods of intense summer heat.
As temperatures continue to rise, these simple gestures could help countless wild visitors stay healthy until cooler weather returns.
