“Why does he look like a medieval drawing of a cat by someone who has never seen a real cat?”

A Rescue Like No Other

After several cats were left behind in an abandoned home, Central Dakota Humane Society stepped in to give them a safe place to live. As the rescuers got to know each cat, their personalities began to shine — and that’s when they noticed something very special about one little feline.

Meet Chip, the Derpy Cat

At first, Chip seemed just like any other cat rescued from the abandoned house. But the more time staff spent with him, the more they noticed his face: it had a wonderfully, unmistakably derpy expression.

Chip doesn’t always wear his derpy look, but when he does, it’s impossible to miss. One of the shelter’s social media volunteers shared his photos on Facebook and Instagram — and overnight, Chip became an internet sensation, putting the tiny North Dakota shelter on the map.

A Smile That Captivates Millions

“People couldn’t get enough of looking at Chip’s derpy grin,” said Cameo Skager, communications and development director at Central Dakota Humane Society. “It just makes you smile … His social media posts have reached more than 3 million viewers.”

The reaction was overwhelming but completely understandable. Chip’s silly expressions and joyful antics brightened everyone’s day, inspiring a flood of humorous and affectionate comments.

Some fans joked:

  • “Bro can see the 5th dimension.”
  • “Chip’s brain: dial up noises on a loop.
  • “This is like if AI tried to make a cat.”
  • “He looks like the Cheshire Cat.”
  • “Why does he look like a medieval drawing of a cat by someone who has never seen a real cat?”

Finding the Perfect Home

All of Chip’s viral fame was wonderful, but the most important attention came from his future family.

“We made a follow-up post to let everyone know he was going to be adopted,” Skager said. “We’ve had comments from New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and even from Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.”

A Happy, Derpy Ending

Now, Chip is thriving in his new home. He loves playing with both his human and feline siblings, and of course, he’s still wonderfully derpy. His family wouldn’t have him any other way — and honestly, neither would the rest of the world.

Chip’s story is a reminder that sometimes, it’s the quirks and imperfections that make life a little brighter. 🐾😺
