This grateful boy refused to give up.

A Stray on the Streets

Koa, a black-and-tan dog, wandered the streets of Detroit until his strength gave out. Exhausted, freezing, and starving, he collapsed at the side of the road, seemingly resigned to his fate.

A Miraculous Rescue

By a stroke of luck, a Good Samaritan driving by noticed Koaโ€™s frail body. Understanding he urgently needed warmth and food, they scooped him into their car and took him home.

As Koa began to warm up, the Good Samaritan reached out to friends and local animal shelters for help. Their efforts eventually connected with Theresa Sumpter, founder and executive director of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, who met Koa at APAWS Veterinary Hospital, where she also serves as executive director.

Critical Condition

โ€œAs soon as we saw the dog being carried in, it was heartbreaking,โ€ Sumpter told The Dodo. โ€œHe couldnโ€™t even lift his head, but somehow he tried to wag his tiny tail.โ€

Koaโ€™s condition was critical. His body temperature was so low it didnโ€™t register on the thermometers. The vet team immediately placed him in a warming unit and administered fluids, but it was clear he needed emergency care.

โ€œHe was so weak and obviously starved,โ€ Sumpter said. At just 33 pounds, Koa showed no signs of disease or internal injury โ€” only the effects of neglect.

Signs of Hope

After a tense 24 hours, Koa began to show small signs of life. He lifted his head and responded to the gentle attention of those around him.

โ€œBy 48 hours, we knew he was going to make it,โ€ Sumpter said. โ€œThen his personality really started to shine through. Heโ€™s a goofy, happy, sweet dog, and watching him transform was astonishing.โ€

A Safe Place to Heal

Once stabilized, Koa moved to a medical foster home for close monitoring. Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue celebrated him on Facebook: โ€œWe knew Koa was a warrior, and that he wanted to live.โ€

Recently, Koa arrived at Lenawee Humane Society, where his transformation continued.

โ€œThis boy is thrilled to be alive,โ€ said Sasha Wilkerson, director of communications at Lenawee Humane Society. โ€œHis entire body wiggles when he wags his tail, and he prances with so much pep in his step โ€ฆ Koa is such a character. Weโ€™re completely obsessed with him.โ€

A Happy Ending in Sight

Since the roadside rescue, the 1ยฝ-year-old pup has gained 15 pounds. His fur is growing back beautifully, and heโ€™s making friends with humans and dogs alike.

โ€œKONG wobblers and snuffle mats are his favorites,โ€ Wilkerson added. โ€œHe loves snuggles and anything involving food.โ€

From the moment he weakly wagged his tail for his rescuers, Koa never gave up. Today, heโ€™s thriving, and with several families eager to meet him, his forever home is just around the corner.

Koaโ€™s story is a reminder that even in the harshest conditions, resilience and love can lead to a happy ending. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’›
