“It’s already been done …” 😰
The other day, Alaqua Animal Refuge (AAR) received a message that instantly stopped everything.
An animal shelter in Alabama — hundreds of miles away from AAR in Florida — reached out about two huskies who had been surrendered and were scheduled for immediate euthanasia unless someone could take them.
Ashley, a member of AAR’s team, responded right away. They had space and were ready to help.
But the reply she received was heartbreaking.
“It’s already been done.”
Ashley was devastated. Even without meeting the dogs, the thought that two young lives had been lost simply due to lack of space was overwhelming.
Then, moments later, her phone buzzed again.
“They’ve only been sedated. Euthanasia has not been performed yet.”
Hope rushed back instantly.
Without hesitation, the AAR team got in their car and drove straight to Alabama. When they arrived, they found the two groggy huskies — later named Gaia and Zeus — along with several other dogs in need.
That day, they didn’t just save two lives.
They saved five.
“[They] saved the huskies, along with three additional at-risk dogs,” AAR shared.
Sadly, stories like this are far too common.
Shelters across the country are facing severe overcrowding, with millions of animals entering shelters each year. Despite the tireless efforts of rescue organizations and staff, many shelters simply don’t have enough space or resources to save every animal.
But Gaia and Zeus are living proof that sometimes, even in the darkest moments, things can turn around.
Now safe at AAR, the dogs are beginning to decompress after everything they’ve been through. They’re slowly settling into their new environment, surrounded by care, patience and kindness.
Soon, they’ll be ready for adoption.
And this time, their future looks bright.
“They are very loving animals,” said AAR.
After coming so close to losing everything, Gaia and Zeus are finally getting the second chance they deserve.
