“Wonder is a softy”

Every cat at Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) is special in their own way. But when a tabby named Wonder arrived, he immediately stood out — thanks to the flattest “airplane ears” the shelter staff had ever seen.

From the moment he walked through the doors, Wonder’s ears stayed pinned to the sides of his head, giving him a permanently anxious and slightly grumpy expression.

A Heartbreaking Start After Losing His Owner

Wonder arrived at ACC’s Queens location about 70 days ago after NYPD officers brought him in. His owner had recently passed away, leaving the senior cat suddenly homeless and deeply distressed.

“He initially displayed a high level of FAS (fear, anxiety, and stress), hissing with a tense face and body, ears flat to the side each time his kennel was approached,” said Alec Rusnack from ACC.

The loss and sudden change of environment clearly took a toll on Wonder, and shelter staff could see he was struggling emotionally.

Progress With Patience and Love

As the days passed, Wonder slowly began to settle in. His body became less tense when people approached, and his hissing reduced. However, one thing never changed — his ears stayed permanently flat.

Luckily, ACC’s feline behavior team had experience with anxious and shy cats. Through patience, gentle interactions, and plenty of encouragement, they began helping Wonder rebuild his confidence.

“With time, patience, positive interactions, and lots of love from our feline behavior team and dedicated cat volunteers, he has made wonderful progress,” Rusnack said. “An excess of squeeze-up treats certainly didn’t hurt either!”

The Note That Changed Everything

Although Wonder was making emotional progress, his airplane ears made him look unapproachable. To help potential adopters understand him better, staff placed a handwritten note on his kennel door:

“I am actually a sweet old boy with resting airplane ears — I’ll greet you with a hiss, but I actually just want pets! Say hi slow and I’ll love you.”

The note revealed the truth: Wonder wasn’t mean — he was just scared.

A Volunteer Takes a Chance on Him

One volunteer named Chelsey noticed Wonder’s ears right away. At first, every visit was met with at least one hiss, and Wonder stayed crouched on the top shelf of his kennel.

Chelsey gave him space, not wanting to overwhelm him. But after reading the note, she decided to try gently petting him.

To her surprise, Wonder leaned in and happily accepted the affection.

“Wonder is a true softy,” Chelsey said.

That moment proved what the staff already knew — behind the anxious expression was a deeply loving cat.

A Shy Senior Still Waiting for His Forever Home

As a senior cat with anxiety, shelter life hasn’t been easy for Wonder. But thanks to consistent care, dedicated volunteers, and behavioral support, he’s growing more confident every day.

Now, as one of the shelter’s longest residents, Wonder is still waiting for someone to fall in love with him — airplane ears and all.

The Perfect Home for Wonder

Shelter staff believe Wonder would thrive in a calm, patient home with someone who understands shy cats.

“Wonder would do best in a quiet household with an experienced adopter who understands that some cats need extra time to feel safe,” Rusnack said.

For now, Wonder remains at ACC with his ears permanently deployed like wings — and his heart wide open, ready for the family who sees past his nervous exterior and into the sweet soul beneath. 🐱✈️💛
