Tourists Find a Stranded Duckling All Alone in Australia
Earlier this month, tourists in Australia came across a tiny duckling stranded by himself, with no parents or siblings in sight. It isn’t known exactly how he became separated from his family, but one thing was clear — the baby duck stood little chance of surviving much longer on his own.
Thankfully, his story was about to take a heartwarming turn.
Kind Strangers Step In to Help
The people who found the duckling decided to take action. They carefully carried him to a local veterinary clinic, where he was examined and given a clean bill of health. While he wasn’t injured, the duckling was still completely orphaned and vulnerable.
The clinic then contacted wildlife rescuer Colleen Edwards from Mosswood Wildlife to take the duckling into her care.
A Rescuer Follows Her Instincts
But Edwards had a feeling the duckling’s family might still be nearby.
“Once I read the details of where he was found, I was convinced that surely there would be a family nearby if someone took the time to look,” Edwards said.
With the squeaking duckling in her hands, she returned to the waterway where he had been discovered and began searching.
A Mother Duck Recognizes Her Baby
After about 40 minutes, something incredible happened — a mother duck appeared and seemed to recognize the duckling’s call.
“[The duck] came rushing over, and I knew this must be Mum,” Edwards said.
Without hesitation, the once-lost duckling paddled straight back to his siblings, reuniting with his family at last.
A Picture-Perfect Ending
Watching the duckling swim away safely behind his mother was an emotional moment for Edwards.
“Watching them swim off together as one big family, I was elated and just beaming with happiness,” she said. “It was actually the picture-perfect ending.”
What began as a lonely and uncertain situation ended with a beautiful reunion — a reminder that sometimes, the best rescue is simply helping families find their way back to each other. 🦆💛
