โ€œThere was an instant connection between the two of themโ€

Earlier this month, Natalie and her 6-year-old daughter, Sage, walked into an adoption event at Niagara SPCA and Humane Society feeling excited and hopeful. Their family had been thinking about getting their first dog, and the room was filled with pups waiting for homes.

Natalie and Sage met several dogs that day, but one immediately stood out: Piper, a brown Labrador mix with one eye.

The moment Piper saw Sage, she ran right up to her with her tail wagging, eager for attention. Sageโ€™s face lit up, and she instantly fell in love. The connection between them was obvious from the start.

For the rest of the afternoon, Sage and Piper played together as if they had known each other forever. When it was time to leave, the family wasnโ€™t ready to make a final decision because Sageโ€™s dad was away and they wanted to talk it over with him first.

But Sage already knew what she wanted. On the ride home, she kept talking about Piper and made it clear that she hoped Piper would become part of their family.

Natalie felt the same way. She loved Piperโ€™s playful personality, gentle energy and sweet spirit. Piperโ€™s one eye only made her more special to them, and they wanted to give her a home where she would always feel safe and loved.

Once Sageโ€™s dad returned, the family made an appointment to visit Piper again. Even though it was raining when they arrived at the shelter, Sage didnโ€™t care at all. The second she got out of the car, she was smiling from ear to ear.

Piper recognized her right away and rushed to the gate, just as excited to see Sage again. When the kennel door opened, Piper ran out into the field and began playing with Sage in the rain as if no time had passed.

Watching her daughter run and laugh with the rescue dog felt like a sign to Natalie. It seemed clear that Piper belonged with them.

Sageโ€™s dad quickly fell in love with Piper too, and the family completed the adoption paperwork. Before long, Piper was riding home with them, officially part of the family.

Now, nearly a week later, Piper is settling beautifully into her new life. She is still slowly getting to know her new animal siblings โ€” two cats and a bunny โ€” but she has already adjusted well to being a house dog.

She sleeps through the night, often snoring happily in bed or in her own dog bed. She enjoys walks, playing with toys, visiting the dog park and carrying around her stuffed animals.

Most of all, Piper loves being with Sage.

After waiting for the right people to find her, Piper finally has a family who adores her exactly as she is โ€” and Sage has the loyal best friend she had been hoping for.
