James Estell was visiting his grandmother in Portsmouth, England, last week when something unusual caught his attention near a neighborβs garbage bins.
One of the bins was so full that its lid wouldnβt close properly.
As Estell walked past, he noticed what appeared to be a face peering through a hole in one of the trash bags.
βI could not believe what I was seeing,β Estell said. βThere was a tortoise looking out of the bin, staring at me. I thought it might have been an ornament for a pond.β
Then the animal moved.
Thatβs when Estell realized the tortoise was very much alive.

βHeβd managed to make a hole in the bag, and he was just sitting there looking at me,β he said.
Knowing the tortoise needed to get out immediately, Estell called his mother and asked her to bring over a box.
He then carefully helped the animal escape from the trash bag.
A video of the unusual discovery showed just how fortunate the timing had been.
The garbage collection was scheduled for roughly an hour later.
βLucky I found him, because the bins were being emptied in about an hour,β Estell said. βThank goodness I found him.β
At first, Estell feared someone might have deliberately thrown the tortoise away.
But a nearby resident soon provided a much more reassuring explanation.
The animal was actually a beloved pet belonging to another neighbor.
With the tortoise now safe, Estell contacted the owner and arranged for the pair to be reunited.
Her reaction made it clear how much the animal meant to her.
β[The owner] was ecstatic. She was crying with happiness,β Estell said. βShe couldnβt believe where Iβd found him.β
The mystery of how the tortoise ended up in the bin was soon solved as well.
Earlier, his owner had been cleaning rubbish from the tortoiseβs outdoor habitat and left a garbage bag sitting on the ground temporarily.
Apparently, the curious tortoise climbed inside while no one was watching.
Not realizing what had happened, his owner later picked up the bag and placed it into the garbage bin.
The tortoise remained hidden inside until he eventually managed to tear a small opening in the bag β just enough for Estell to spot his face.
Had Estell walked past a little later, the outcome could have been very different.
Instead, a perfectly timed glance helped return a longtime pet to a relieved owner.
βI think she knows how lucky she really was,β Estell said. βSheβs had that tortoise for years.β
