They were only a few weeks old 🥺
In January, a passerby in Onancock made a heartbreaking discovery outside the Historic Onancock School.
Near the building sat a large black bin marked “Family Dollar.” Curious about the container, the man lifted the lid — and found eight young puppies crammed inside.
The tiny dogs, only about 10 weeks old, were weak and frightened as they struggled in the cramped space.
A Quick-Thinking Rescue
Realizing the puppies needed help immediately, the man took action.
He drilled air holes into the lid of the bin to give them ventilation and then contacted the Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility.
Unfortunately, one puppy died before rescuers could arrive. The remaining seven puppies were taken safely into the care of animal control officers.
Sadly, Not an Uncommon Situation
According to shelter manager Jeri Winn, abandoned puppies are sadly a common occurrence on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
However, finding animals dumped in the busy seaside town of Onancock is less typical.
Despite the tragic situation, Winn said she was grateful the puppies had been left somewhere visible where someone could quickly find them.
Safe at a Rescue Organization
The surviving puppies were soon transferred to Critters 4 U Rescue, where they are now receiving care.
Rescuers identified them as Australian Shepherd mixes and gave them playful names inspired by the seven dwarfs:
- Doc
- Grumpy
- Happy
- Sleepy
- Bashful
- Sneezy
- Dopey
Waiting for Their Forever Homes
One of the puppies has already found a loving home, while the others remain in foster care waiting to be adopted.
Shelter workers say the case highlights how vital rescue partnerships are when animals in need are discovered.
Organizations like Critters 4 U Rescue step in to provide medical care, foster homes and adoption opportunities for vulnerable animals.
Thanks to the quick-thinking passerby and the help of local rescuers, the puppies now have a second chance at safe and happy lives. 🐶💛
