She’s still looking for a home …
When two tiny kittens arrived at the SPCA of Wake County in 2018, staff quickly noticed something unusual.
One of the siblings, a female kitten named Garnet, had incredibly large and vivid blue eyes unlike anything the shelter team had seen before.
Her brother Santiago, meanwhile, looked like a typical kitten with normal greenish-yellow eyes.
Raised Together From the Beginning
The tiny littermates were still too young to eat on their own when they arrived, so shelter staff bottle-fed them until they were strong enough to be weaned.
Before long, the pair found a home together.
Because the kittens had always been close, they were adopted as a pair and spent the next several years living happily with their owner.
An Unexpected Return to the Shelter
Seven years later, their story took a difficult turn.
Their owner had to move into an assisted living facility and sadly could not bring the cats with her. With no other option, she returned Garnet and Santiago to the shelter.
Situations like this are heartbreaking but sometimes unavoidable.
As shelter staff explained, life circumstances can change in ways no one expects.
Garnet’s Eyes Became Even More Striking
When the cats came back, staff were amazed to see how Garnet had changed.
Her eyes had grown even larger and more vibrant, with deep blue coloring and unusual white streaks.
Veterinarians examined her multiple times and confirmed that her eye structure does not harm her health or vision.
Because her irises are small, she can be sensitive to bright light and prefers dimly lit spaces. Otherwise, she lives a normal and happy life.
The exact reason for her unusual eye appearance remains a mystery.
A Sweet Personality Behind the Unique Look
Garnet’s striking appearance has earned comparisons to fictional characters like Gollum or even an alien.
But shelter staff say her personality is just as remarkable as her looks.
She is known for being:
- extremely affectionate
- a dedicated cuddler
- surprisingly clever
In fact, she has become very skilled at solving puzzle feeders, showing off her intelligence during playtime.
A Bond That Can’t Be Broken
Since birth, Garnet and Santiago have never been separated.
Because of that bond, the shelter hopes the pair will be adopted together into the same home.
Despite their sweet nature and Garnet’s unforgettable eyes, the siblings have been waiting since last May for someone to take them home.
Staff believe they would make a wonderful addition to the right family.
