They’ve been through so much together ❤️
Tarzan and Tanya entered the world in a traveling circus, confined to a cage scarcely larger than a queen-sized mattress. They had never felt grass beneath their paws.
Despite the harsh conditions, they found comfort in each other. Tarzan groomed and soothed Tanya daily, while Tanya stood guard, protecting him from perceived threats. In a life defined by confinement, their bond became their refuge.
A Turning Point in Guatemala
When Guatemala banned the use of wild animals in circuses, hope finally arrived. Animal Defenders International negotiated the lions’ surrender and arranged for their transfer to a sanctuary in South Africa.
Rescuers provided long-overdue medical care before beginning the 27-hour journey. During the flight, Tarzan and Tanya traveled in separate crates. Even so, they maintained eye contact the entire time, watching one another for reassurance.

A Reunion Worth Waiting For
Upon arrival in South Africa, rescuers opened Tarzan’s crate first. However, he refused to step out. He kept his focus on Tanya, who was still confined nearby.
Only after Tanya entered the enclosure did Tarzan follow. Then, at last, they reunited on open ground.
They nuzzled, rubbed faces, and explored their new space together. For the first time in their lives, they pressed their paws into real grass — side by side.
A New Chapter Begins
Today, Tarzan and Tanya continue to adjust and thrive in their sanctuary home.
After years of confinement, they now experience space, safety, and freedom — together.
Their story is not only about rescue. It is about loyalty, resilience, and the powerful bond that carried them through hardship until a better life finally began.
