For nearly three weeks, Teddy’s family had no idea where the little dog was or whether he was still alive.
Teddy disappeared on August 2 while hiking with his owner on Helvellyn, one of the highest mountains in England’s Lake District. After he vanished, people began putting up posters and searching the surrounding countryside, hoping someone might catch sight of him.
Days passed without any sign.
Then, on August 21, volunteers searching the mountain heard something they had been waiting desperately to hear: barking.
The sound was coming from Dry Gill, a steep ravine on Helvellyn’s slopes.
Searchers managed to locate Teddy, but reaching him safely was another problem. He was trapped in difficult terrain, so the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist.
Seven members of the team headed into the ravine and began the delicate rescue operation.
After several hours, they finally reached Teddy and secured him.
Although the little dog had lost a significant amount of weight during his time alone on the mountain, rescuers were relieved to find that he did not appear to have any obvious serious injuries.
For the journey back down, Teddy was carefully placed inside a rucksack. Rescuers also gave him a small amount of food before beginning the descent.
Once they reached the car park, the moment everyone had been hoping for finally arrived.
Teddy was reunited with his owner.
He was then taken to a veterinarian so his condition could be properly examined after spending nearly three weeks exposed to the elements.
The rescue was particularly emotional because Teddy’s disappearance had captured the attention of people throughout the surrounding community. Volunteers and residents had continued looking for him even as the days stretched into weeks.
The mountain rescue team praised everyone who refused to stop searching.
What began as a frightening disappearance on one of England’s best-known mountains ended with Teddy being carried safely back down in a backpack.
After surviving almost three weeks alone on Helvellyn, the exhausted little dog was finally back with the person who had been waiting for him all along.
