They desperately needed help.
Laurie Hood, founder and president of Alaqua Animal Refuge, received an urgent call from an animal advocate in Alabama.
The caller told her, “You are our only hope.”
Rescuers had discovered 36 animals living inside a 22-foot trailer — 12 dogs and 24 cats.
The animals had very little space to move around, and none of them had ever been outside. All 24 cats were kept inside the trailer’s bathroom.
The woman caring for them loved the animals, but the situation had become too difficult to manage.
Local rescue groups had already been contacted, but none were able to take all 36 animals. When Alaqua Animal Refuge was asked for help, the team agreed.
Early the next morning, rescuers drove from Florida to Alabama. They were worried about what they might find.
When they arrived, the animals were brought out of the trailer one by one.
“They did not growl or resist the leads,” Hood said. “They simply looked frightened.”
That moment gave rescuers hope. They realized the animals could be given a fresh start.
The team transported all 36 animals back to the refuge, where they immediately began receiving medical care.
Many of them still have a long recovery ahead.
“Their physical recovery is only part of the journey,” Hood said. “They will also need time, patience, and compassionate care to begin recovering emotionally.”
It may take months before some of the animals are ready for adoption.
For now, they are experiencing things they never had before.
The dogs are finally able to go outside, run around, and feel grass under their paws. The cats now have enough space to move freely and relax.
All 36 animals are being given the time and care they need before finding safe and loving homes.
