When Gina Mocci began receiving messages about a pig abandoned at a junkyard, she wasn’t sure how the rescue would work. Mocci, a board member with Eastern Snouts Adoption and Rehoming, had plenty of animal rescue experience, but she was at work and didn’t have any of her usual supplies with her.
She thought about going home first to grab a crate and proper equipment. But something told her not to wait. So, after work, she drove straight to the junkyard with the only thing she had available — a half-empty bag of leftover Moe’s chips.
When Mocci arrived, the junkyard employees were relieved. They told her animals had been dumped there before, including dogs, cats, peacocks and even alligators. But this was the first time they had found a pig.
The pig was understandably nervous and unsure of everyone around her. Mocci knew she had to move slowly if she wanted to earn the animal’s trust. Since she had no rescue gear, she decided to use the chips.
She crouched down, tossed a few chips toward the pig and held out her hand so the animal could smell her. After a few cautious moments, the pig slowly came closer. Mocci could tell she wanted to trust someone.
The pig, later named Amy Swinehouse, gently accepted the chips as Mocci tried to figure out the next step. Junkyard staff told her there was a building where they could temporarily contain Amy safely. Mocci assumed it was nearby, but it turned out to be about a quarter mile away.
Still, Amy followed her all the way through the junkyard, guided by a trail of chips and calm encouragement.
Once Amy was safely inside the building, she began to relax. She accepted more treats and even belly rubs, seeming grateful to finally receive kindness. Another rescuer soon arrived, and together they loaded Amy into a car and took her to a foster home.
Although Amy was scared at first, Mocci believed she understood that someone was trying to help. She just needed patience and a gentle approach.
As soon as Amy arrived at her foster home, she began to thrive. It didn’t take long for her foster family to fall completely in love and decide to adopt her permanently.
Now, Amy Swinehouse’s days of fear and abandonment are behind her. She spends her time enjoying treats, belly scratches and the love of a family who chose her forever.
